It would actually be to try to mind some of that material that you cannot find on Earth but you know they probably can't go back because of the Van Allen belts. They don't go back, as there is no longer the political one upmanship they had back in Kenedy's day to beat the Russians. Russia, China have both been there now (granted with robots), America also makes more money with weapons than science - so no incentive to go, but Mars though is still ok, as nobody has done that yet and America will want to be first.
